Statement from the Shia Muslim Council on the U.S. and Israeli Military Strikes on Iran

The Shia Muslim Council speaks today with a heavy heart, a grieving spirit, and an unwavering moral conscience. We condemn in the strongest possible terms the ongoing joint military strikes by the United States and Israel against the sovereign nation of Iran — strikes that have already claimed the lives of countless innocent civilians and constituted grave violations of international law.

The Assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei
We unequivocally condemn the assassination of Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei. The extrajudicial killing of a sitting head of state is a flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter, international humanitarian law, and the foundational norms of civilized conduct among nations. No court sanctioned it. No international body authorized it. This was an assassination, plain and simple.

For hundreds of millions of Shia Muslims worldwide, Ayatollah Khamenei was not only a political leader but a source of spiritual authority and religious guidance. His killing is not strength; It is a profound moral failure that will echo through history and inflame the conscience of Muslims and people of goodwill everywhere.

The Attack on the Girls’ School
We are heartbroken and horrified by the strike on a girls’ school in southern Iran during school hours, killing dozens of innocent children. Under the Geneva Conventions, schools are explicitly protected. This is a war crime. We call upon the International Criminal Court to investigate immediately, and we offer our deepest condolences to every family shattered by this tragedy.

Return to Diplomacy — Now
Diplomatic negotiations were producing meaningful progress in the days before these strikes. That path was abandoned in favor of bombs. We call upon the United States to declare an immediate ceasefire and return to the negotiating table. We call upon the UN Security Council to fulfill its mandate and demand de-escalation. As Allah commands us: “And if they incline to peace, then incline to it also.” (Quran 8:61)

We stand in solidarity with all innocent people of Iran and urge our community to pray for peace, contact elected representatives to demand a ceasefire, and remain united in faith and conscience.
Whoever kills an innocent soul, it is as if he has killed all of humanity.” — Quran 5:32
