Dear Friends, Next week, Parliament reconvenes and on Friday I will be returning to Ottawa for the Liberal National Caucus in advance of the fall session. As Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Emergency Management and Community Resilience and as a Member of the Standing Committee on Justice, and Human Rights and the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security, I am looking forward to recommencing legislative work. Here is an update on our government’s latest initiatives to boost economic investment, modernize national infrastructure, and support our local community as well as some information on what I have been doing locally. Unleashing Investment: The Canada Investment Summit & Productivity Mega Deduction Historic Global Commitments: Prime Minister Carney recently convened the first Canada Investment Summit, bringing together international investors from nearly 30 countries managing over $100 trillion in assets. The summit successfully unleashed nearly $500 billion in new investment commitments for Canadian infrastructure and businesses, including a landmark $52.5 billion AI infrastructure investment in Saskatchewan. The Productivity Mega Deduction: Building on the Productivity Super-Deduction introduced in Budget 2025, the government announced the Productivity Mega Deduction. This tax incentive permanently expands immediate 100% expensing from roughly 15% to more than 65% of business assets- including R&D, software, mining property, computer equipment, aircraft, rail track, bridges, and roads. Global Tax Advantage: This policy drops Canada’s marginal effective tax rate on new business investment from 13% to 6.4%- making it the lowest in the G7 and less than half the rate in the United States. With an estimated fiscal cost of $36 billion over five years, the deduction is projected to generate up to $22 billion annually in economic output and support up to 80,000 jobs per year over the next decade. Reinvesting in Infrastructure: Airport Concessions & Sovereign Broadband Airport Investments: The federal government will seek private investment through long-term concessions to operate Canada’s four largest airports: Montréal–Trudeau, Toronto-Pearson, Vancouver, and Calgary. Retaining Public Assets: The federal government will retain full ownership of the underlying land and assets while partnering with airport authorities, airlines, and local governments to attract private capital. Reinvesting in Nation-Building: Tens of billions of dollars raised through this initiative will be reinvested directly into next-generation Canadian infrastructure, including regional airports, local transit, and a sovereign broadband backbone connecting Canadians from coast to coast to coast. Community Health, Food Security, and Remembrance Last week was the 20th anniversary of the Dawson College shooting and the 25th anniversary of 9/11. As we reflect, our thoughts remain with all those whose lives were forever changed. It was an honour for me to attend the Dawson College memorial ceremony commemorating the 2006 Dawson College tragedy and to remember Anastasia De Sousa alongside her parents, Louise and Nelson De Sousa. I also visited The Depot (Community Food Centre) last week to meet with their team and discuss how federal support can assist their important work strengthening food security for local families. This week, alongside Marc Miller, I visited the University of Montreal’s research facilities at the CHUM to learn more about their cutting-edge diabetes research and its potential to improve health outcomes. I also met with Saint John’s Ambulance, one of our government’s partners under the Humanitarian Workforce Program, and this Sunday I will be back in Montreal and participating in the Terry Fox Run in TMR.
