Montreal police issued an Amber Alert for a missing a baby girl who authorities believe was allegedly abducted by her 18-year-old mother on Tuesday.
Zeynab Cherrabbi El Alaoui, who is one years old, was last seen at her grandparents’ home in the Lachine borough.
Const. Jean-Pierre Brabant said the baby was reported missing around 9:25 a.m. from Louis-Basile-Pigeon Street. Nothing else was taken from the home.
“When they (the grandparents) went inside the room in the morning, they saw that the child was missing and that it was an open window in the back,” Brabant said.
“So from there we had reason to believe she was abducted.”
The baby girl has blue eyes and brown hair. She was last seen wearing a pale pink onesie decorated with a pink and white unicorn.
The girl’s mother is Miryanna Monterrosa-Laberge. She stands at five foot three inches tall and weighs 120 pounds. She has a scar on her upper left lip and another scar on her forehead.
Brabant said the grandparents have custody of the child and that Moterrosa-Laberge did not reside there.
Police located the baby’s father in Laval, just north of Montreal, and he was questioned by investigators.
Door-to-door searches were underway in the area before police launched the Amber Alert to find the baby and her mother, according to Brabant.
Local hospitals and the Montreal airport were checked. Brabant said authorities also made contact with emergency responders.
“We’re worried about the child and mother’s health,” Brabant said.
There is no vehicle associated with the case at the moment, but when asked how the mother may have allegedly taken the baby, Brabant says they haven’t ruled out any form of transit. This includes car, public transit or even bicycle.
“We’re not closing any doors,” he said.
Police are looking at potential video surveillance in the area and are asking Lachine residents to check their own cameras and their backyards.
