New York State Police responded to reports of a rollover crash at about 12:50 p.m. on southbound Interstate 87, near Lake George Village in Warren County, 80 kilometres north of Albany, N.Y.
One person was airlifted to Albany Medical Center in critical condition, said state police spokesperson Deanna Cohen. Another dozen passengers were taken to Glens Falls Hospital with minor injuries, according to hospital spokesperson Ray Agnew.
There were 23 people on board, including the bus driver, according to state police.“There is one confirmed fatality, one passenger with serious injuries and 10 passengers with non-life threatening injuries,” the force said in a late Friday afternoon update.In a statement Friday evening, Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante said her thoughts are with the victims of the crash and their loved ones.
“It is with deep sadness that I learned about the tragic bus accident which occurred between Montreal and New York,” she said. “I would like to thank the first responders who did an exceptional job in accompanying and rescuing the passengers and I send my sincerest condolences to the family of the deceased. My thoughts are with you.”
A total of 12 ambulances and at least two firetrucks responded to the accident, said Don Lehman, a spokesperson for Warren County.Passengers who weren’t injured were temporarily taken to a local fire station, where they were interviewed by state police about the accident, Lehman said. Translators were provided for those who spoke French.
