Markham Hotel Attack is Another Sign of Worsening Islamophobia.NCCM

Asalamu alaikum / Peace be upon you

Sometimes, it is almost impossible to put into words the raw emotions involved with our work.

When we learned about the 54-year-old hotel employee viciously beaten in Markham, Ontario, we initially had little idea about his injuries.

Yet when we found out just how badly he suffered, our anguish, disgust, and pain could not be clearly articulated. His injuries turned out to be life-altering. He may permanently lose his eyesight. He cannot speak and he cannot eat.

It is one of the worst Islamophobia-motivated attacks we have ever recorded. We had to be there for this brother and his family. So we gathered our strength, spoke with family members and the police, and regrouped to help this man attain justice.

Yesterday, we stood with community partners, the York Regional Police, and two family members of the victim at the Jame Abu Bakr Siddique mosque in Scarborough, Ontario, to tell the country that we are sick and tired.

Sick and tired of having to speak about these incidents. Sick and tired of asking for the same policy changes, to little avail. Sick and tired of having to see our community members suffer.

In the past year and more, we at NCCM have recorded a dramatic rise in Islamophobia related complaints to our organization. Here are just some examples of the incidents we had to deal with in recent months:

– A man planning to bomb a mosque and his Muslim neighbours in Newmarket, ON.

– A Muslim woman beaten in a swarming attack inside a restaurant in Oshawa, ON.

– A Muslim woman in Ajax, ON was sprayed with an accelerant and almost lit on fire inside a local library.

For every incident we address, there are many more that we cannot get to. Simply put: we are overwhelmed during a time of dramatically rising Islamophobia, on all levels. Today, we asked all leaders to commit to never using anti-Muslim rhetoric in any of their communications, and to endorse the recommendations made in the 2023 Senate and 2024 House reports on combatting Islamophobia.

We are oversubscribed and undermanned. We need more so we can fight this battle on every front. We have to stem the tide.

We need your leadership. Donate today.

Wasalam,

The NCCM Team
